{rollo}OTO Breda, former OTO Melara, and IVECO, former FIAT, developed this design for foreign markets during the seventies, the first prototype was ready for testing in 1980. The client was Dubai, who ordered two butches of OF-40 MBTs, 18 Mk1 and 18 Mk2, merely Mk1's improved.
The equipment of the Mk2 included a day-night stabilised sights system for the commader, improved computerised fire-contol sytem, and a low light level camera mounted above the gun. In standard version, it's laser range finder, NBC protection, a 105 mm stabilised gun firing standard NATO ammunition, and deep fording kit. The chassis of the OF-40 can be used to mount several types of turrets, enabling the vehicle for several different purposes, like AA, or self-propelled artillery. OTO Breda improved the powerpack to develope the Palmaria, a 155 mm self-propelled gun the export market, too. It's in project an improved version of the OF-40, with a better chassis, an improved powerpack, and a 120 mm rifled tank gun.
